Natasha Dalal On Her Fashion Journey & Love For Food

(Last Updated On: September 11, 2019)

Six years ago, Natasha Dalal came back to India from New York, with a fashion designing degree in hand. Fast forward to this year, and things have accelerated at lightning speed for the young designer. Her outfits have been sported on celebrities like Alia Bhatt and Soha Ali Khan.

Here, she talks about her love for fashion, her journey as a women entrepreneur, and her favourite picks on Scootsy.

When and how did you start your fashion journey?
“I think my fashion journey started when I was in school – I was always doodling dresses instead of taking notes in class, constantly cutting up, embellishing and painting my own clothes. I would be creating entire collections in paper dolls with mood boards and everything. After working for some time at fashion magazines, I knew for sure that I wanted to be the one designing, so I took a gap year to prep for my dream school, The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. I had to learn how to sew and majorly improve my sketching skills just to get in.”

Was it difficult being a women entrepreneur at the time? In what way?
“I was very lucky to have had the support of my family. They let me go, even though they had reservations at the time. This was a time when fashion was considered an alternative career choice. Eventually, they realised that it was my true passion and supported me 100 percent. After returning from New York, I was very clear about how I wanted to take it forward, but I did have to prove to many people that I was completely serious about my choice.”

Any advice you’d like to give budding women fashion entrepreneurs?

“Be clear about your vision and ideas. It is very important to have an aesthetic that is true to you and to trust your instinct when it comes to designing. It’s also important to get lots of working experience before you start, so you know what you are getting into, because there are really no days off when it’s your own business. It’s a competitive line, it takes a lot of hard work and it takes years to really develop a style.”

What’s next on your plate?
“I want to show at Fashion Week in India and, one day in the near future, create a new line to showcase in New York.”

What inspires you?
“Travel! Every time I go to a new place, the creative juices start flowing.”

Do you use Scootsy?
“Yes, all the time! Sweetish House Mafia is my weekend guilty pleasure. I order from Pack-A-Pav, Starbucks, Joss, Ray’s Cafe & Pizzeria, Suzette, and so many more!”

What are your most-ordered dishes on Scootsy?
There are so many, but I really love ordering the Nutella Sea Salt Cookies from Sweetish House Mafia; the Rich Chocolate Buttercream Cake from Deliciae By Bunty Mahajan; the Mocha Frappuccino from Starbucks; the Paneer & Cheese Pav from Pack-A-Pav; the Keto-friendly Mushroom, Asparagus, Artichoke & Cheese Pizza from Silver Beach Cafe; the Garlic & Chilli Cheese from Foodhall; the Red Velvet Dessert Shot from Country Of Origin; and the Japanese Udon Noodles With Greens from Joss.
